Canceled data center projects
How many data center projects have been canceled?
We track 11 data center projects that were canceled, withdrawn or voted down, adding up to about 5.5 GW of planned capacity that won't get built where it was proposed. North Carolina leads with 4. That's out of 114 projects on the tracker. A few more were canceled this month that we don't track as projects; they're listed further down.
If you were lining up travel for one of these, don't. The call won't come. Check the tracker for jobs that are still building.
Why does North Carolina have so many?
One developer, Energy Storage Solutions, accounts for 3 of them, in Edgecombe and Cumberland counties. Its 900 MW Kingsboro proposal was withdrawn while Edgecombe County officials were weighing a moratorium, per DCD. Each one links to its source below.
Why do data center projects get canceled?
In the projects below, the reasons come down to a few things. Local boards voted no or wouldn't extend a permit (Hanover County, VA and Westfield, MA). Developers withdrew their applications (Apex, NC and Brighton, CO), sometimes with a moratorium in the works (Edgecombe County, NC). Or the land deal fell apart (Hancock County, IA). Amazon, Loudoun County, VA
Amazon dropped its plan for data centers on the 122-acre former George Washington University campus in Ashburn after a deal with county leaders. Most of the land goes to housing and mixed use. The Washington Post

The developers withdrew their applications for a cluster of seven data centers in Upper Merion. The developer is suing the township, so this could end up in court. 6abc Philadelphia

PNK Group, Wisconsin Rapids, WI
The Common Council voted 7-0 to deny the permit for a hyperscale data center at the old paper mill site. The city is also under a one-year data center moratorium. WAOW
